14mm vs 16mm Pickleball Paddles: Core Thickness Explained
What core thickness actually changes in a pickleball paddle, and whether 14mm or 16mm suits your style.
Most modern pickleball paddles come with a 14mm or 16mm polymer or foam core. Thickness changes how the paddle feels on contact, how much the ball pops off the face and how stable it is.
16mm paddles: control and stability
- Softer, plusher feel, with the ball staying on the face a touch longer (more dwell time).
- More control on dinks, drops and resets.
- A more stable face on hard-hit balls and off-centre contact.
16mm is the most popular choice and the one we recommend for most players, especially beginners and intermediates. Examples: Selkirk OMNI 16mm, Vole Pronto X, Wika QD Fire 2.
14mm paddles: pop and speed
- Crisper, livelier response with more pop.
- Quicker off the face, which helps on counters and speed-ups.
- Less forgiving, so it rewards clean technique.
14mm suits fast-hands players and aggressive counter-punchers. The RPM Q2, RPM Jade and RPM Friction Pro V2 are all available in 14mm.
Which should you choose?
- Want touch, control and forgiveness? 16mm.
- Want extra pop and play a fast, attacking game? 14mm.
- Not sure? Start with 16mm. It's easier to control while you develop your game.
Don't forget the edge tape
Edge tape is sized to core thickness, so match it to your paddle. Our US PPF edge tape comes in 14mm and 16mm, and the Court Ready Set lets you pick the right size along with two overgrips.
